Volunteer K9 teams and their role in a provincial GSAR program K9 teams are an important element in any response to a Ground Search and Rescue incident. However the way K9 teams become involved in Search and Rescue incidents varies from province to province. It is important that volunteer K9 teams meet a provincial standard as in other areas of Search and Rescue. In Manitoba the K9 teams are being integrated into the provincial volunteer network along with the regular volunteer teams, however this is not the case in all provinces. What is the best model for integration that each province can adopt?

That sinking feeling: Preparing for an effective response to marine disasters Cruise ships are sailing more frequently into Canada's remote and northern areas, and offshore exploration is also on the rise. Yet these regions do not share the same level of charting, weather forecasting, and SAR response services that are found further south. What are the issues, and how can industry, government, and the SAR system respond?

Planning for disaster: The effective employment of SAR resources in disaster response This is a follow-on from last year's session that explored the interface between SAR and emergency management. While some jurisdictions already manage SAR and emergency response under the same umbrella, this isn't always the case. What are the most effective ways of engaging traditional SAR resources in disaster response?

Responding to lost persons with Autism: Increasing search effectiveness through awareness, research, and proactive measures. While it is not known exactly how many searches each year in Canada involve subjects with Autism Spectrum Disorder it could be as high as 250, based on the prevalence in the general population. This presentation will provide critical awareness information; discuss specific considerations based on a review of past Search and Rescue incidents; and highlight the SAR-NIF project in Nova Scotia focusing on being prepared and equipped to search for a person with Autism.
6 Monday, Oct 31
13:30-15:00
Managing technology while managing SAR: A practical look at how to integrate people and technology for an effective SAR response Integrating new technology into SAR operations can sometimes be seen both as a blessing, and as a burden. In this session, two police services will demonstrate how they have integrated various mapping, GPS, and record-keeping technologies into their search operations to best effect. Actual case studies – both wilderness and urban – will be used to highlight their approach to search management, and to review lessons learned.
